Other Partners of the Biobank Network

In addition to FINBB members, the following biobanks also belong to the Finnish biobank network:

Blood Service Biobank

The Blood Service Biobank’s research focus is on health promotion through disease prevention and the identification of disease mechanisms. The Blood Service Biobank also specializes in specific aspects of transfusion medicine, such as the safety of blood donation and transfusion and research of the blood supply chain. The Blood Service Biobank was registered in the Biobank Register of Valvira (now Fimea) on the 30th of May 2017.

The Blood Service Biobank collects samples and data from blood donors who have consented to biobanking from all over Finland for research purposes. Comprehensive and high-quality material facilitates high-quality and ethically acceptable scientific research and product development within the biobank's research area. A large pool of donors and donors who meet the blood donation criteria, together with the strict quality standards of the Blood Service, ensure the high quality of the collection.

In addition to 57,000 donors' genotype data, the biobank contains longitudinal samples, special collections, and proteomics data. Tailored sample collections, re-call studies, or supplying material by phenotype or genotype, for example, are possible according to the research needs. Samples can be supplied fresh or frozen. It is possible to request material for research use based on a specific criterion, such as health or demographic data. The material is also well suited for use as reference material.

As of 2017, the types of samples collected in the biobank are DNA, plasma, serum, and cell samples (PBMC), and related data. The collection also includes cord blood stem cell products and associated data. Sample types to be collected as needed are fresh whole blood and fresh buffy coat.

Hematological Biobank (FHRB Biobank)

Finnish Hematology Registry and Clinical Biobank (FHRB Biobank) operates nationwide and collects samples and data from patients with hematological diseases. FHRB Biobank is owned by the Finnish Association of Hematology, Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland and Finnish Red Cross Blood Service. The Cancer Society of Finland and The Association of Finnish Cancer Patients are also involved in the operations. Biobank’s research area covers the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of hematological disorders.
